The Wash Day Experience: An adventurous wash day and my big Bun!

This wash day had me in smiles from start to finish. Maybe it's because I got to try out a few new products (I have a couple of products that I've been using for a while now that I haven't reviewed I plan to do that in subsequent posts) or a tool which I tried out *big grin*

I could write a different post lamenting to you about what I went through with dry hair this past week. My hair was super dry and I didn't have ANY good moisturiser to help me out. Long story short, I ended up paying my way to the Mall and got myself 'Cantu Shea butter leave in Conditioner to use as my moisturiser (I guess frustration made me pick this one out of the other hair milks and hair lotions I held in my hands... Did not even remember to check the ingredient list or make thorough research to know if it was a moisturising leave in or protein based leave in). Got home and decided to see your reviews on Instagram and I got very positive reviews.  I then applied this to my dry hair in sections and it 'breathed life into my strands!'  I thought, this is it! Sealed my hair and went to sleep. But by nightfall the next day my hair was dry... . Again :-( End of story... Lol

Wash Day Procedure
(1) I applied some Herbal Essences bye bye breakage conditioner and detangled my hair sparingly using my fingers. Then I remembered I had recently bought a hair brush and decided to test it out.

Bottom left is hair lost during prepoo detangling, while top right is hair lost during detangling with D C on just before rinsing. This is after not washing my hair in 2weeks.

Now I'm not talking about a Denman brush or a boat bristle brush or an expensive brush, this is a brush I found in my boyfriends house and I remember using it to brush my edges and it was ohhh sooo soft on my hair! I decided to get my own intending to use it for gel application.

Left pic is my clumped strands when finger detangling during prepoo with Herbal Essences bye bye breakage conditioner, while right (top and bottom pics)  are after following up with my hair brush. You can see how detangled it got my hair!

(2) followed up using the hair brush (I had divided my hair into four sections)  I detangled gently and it removed all tangles in my hair really well. The hair I lost to the brush in all sections of my hair put together was really small and most of it were she'd hair. I was really happy. Then I put on a plastic cap to prepoo for 30 mins.

(3) I shampooed my hair with Ultra Black Hair sulphate free shampoo focusing on the scalp as well as the length of my hair to remove product build up. Rinsed out the shampoo with warm water and wrapped my hair in a cotton shirt.

(4) I needed a moisturising DC and nothing but a purely moisturising one so I brought out my Queen Helene Cholesterol Deep conditioner. I  guess the consistency of this DC is what keeps me away, it's just too thick. I checked the ingredient list to make sure there's no HYDROLISED WHEAT PROTEIN or HYDROLISED OAT PROTEIN or any other HYDROLISED Stuff, lol.. No, not today! So I mixed up 3 spoonfuls of the DC with a small quantity of water and added a spoonful of avocado oil. Deep conditioned for 30 mins by applying heat from my blow dryer.

(5) At the end of the 30 mins my hair clumped a bit and I detailed again with the brush. But I could tell the brush isn't fond of really WET hair. It detangled well but the hair in the brush was slightly more than when I was prepooing. I Rinsed it off with cool water and wrapped my hair in a cotton t-shirt for 15 mins.

(6) Next I applied my Cantu Shea butter leave in Conditioner (later found out it was protein based so I'll only be using this as a leave in on washdays when I use a moisturising DC just to get a balance of moisture and protein in my hair.

I then sealed that in with a mix of castor and avocado oils. With my blow dryer on the warm setting, I dried my hair till it was 50% dry then applied my Kuza hair polisher (heat protectant) and continued blow drying till it was dry. I didn't use the cold setting because it would take me a lot of time and I wasn't sure of the power supply owing to the fact that I hadn't had power supply for almost 3weeks. When it came I had to be fast.

After blow drying I used the brush on my dry hair and this added volume to my blow dried hair. I also applied some gel and brushed down my edges.  With this washday,  my hair was moisturised! The moisture lasted up to two days and it just might get to the next day. The products combo was epic and very much needed. I put my hair into a bun and that is how I'll style my hair for the rest of the week.

A Review of some new products used this washday.
The Queen Helene Cholesterol DC was just sooo moisturising. As a fact, I have found my staple Moisturising deep conditioner. It didn't really give me that much slip which is a reason why I kind of prefer ORS but I'll see if the oils can help or better still I'll just mix it up with ORS.

The Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioner was also awesome! I'll keep using it as a leave in on washdays only. I also heard the Cantu line has a Creamy Moisturiser that gives lasting moisture. I'm in search of that moisturiser that will keep my strands hydrated for at least 2days. So that moisturiser is definitely on my wish list.

Hair brush, where to find in Nigeria, virtually everywhere! I haven't used a boar bristle brush or a Denman but I got a hair brush for when I straightened my hair and it broke off quite a good number of strands with each stroke that I had to stop using it. This one works better for application of gels and detangling of dry hair or oiled hair. I'm still thinking that I may have had more shed hairs because of the shampooing but then again they were more of shed strands. In all I'll be limiting the use of combs on washday to a zero because using combs gives me wayyy more breakage than with the brush. If you own one of those boar bristle brushes or Denman I'd like for you to compare with this brush and give me feedback right?

That's it ladies!  Till next time... * hugs n kisses *muah*

    1. Thanks dear :-) I looked out for those proteins because I didn't want to use a protein DC or even a light protein DC. It's not that they are harmful in anyway.
